Napoli's Lorenzo Insigne robbed at gunpoint, agent confirms

Lorenzo Insigne is recovering after being robbed at gunpoint on Saturday, with his agent saying it was a terrible shock for the Napoli forward.

Insigne, 24, is reported to have handed over €800, a Rolex watch and several items of jewellery to two men on a scooter.

They stopped his car and threatened him with a pistol as he was driving home from a night out eating with friends in the Vomero district of Naples.

"It was a terrible experience for Lorenzo," Insigne's agent Antonio Ottaiano is quoted as saying by Il Messaggero. "He told me how awful he felt. Fortunately he had the clarity of mind not to move and, aware of the danger straight away, he followed the robbers' instructions.

"Fortunately it all ended without any consequences. Incidents like these can end in tragedy. After the first moments of shock, I have spoken to him again and he's serene again. He's training again and is motivated for the match against Fiorentina [on Monday night]."

According to unconfirmed reports in the Italian media at the weekend, the thieves shouted out to Insigne as they made their getaway and called on him to dedicate a goal against Fiorentina to them.

It is not the first time a Napoli player has been robbed in such a manner in Naples.

Marek Hamsik has also been stopped by two men with a gun on a scooter, while the wife of Edinson Cavani was subjected to a similar ordeal when the Paris Saint-Germain striker played for the Serie A club.
