Napoli's Lorenzo Insigne faces lengthy spell out after undergoing surgery

Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne has successfully undergone surgery on his right knee and will be sidelined until next year.

Insigne, 23, tore his anterior cruciate ligament during Sunday's 1-0 win over Fiorentina and it was announced by the Naples club on Monday that the player was due to go under the knife.

Napoli have since confirmed that the Italy international has now undergone successful surgery, while he is expected to be ruled out for six months.

An official club statement read: "Lorenzo Insigne underwent knee surgery in Rome. The surgery was carried out by professor Mariani at Villa Stuart, lasted one hour and 15 minutes and it was a success.''

Insigne's injury is a blow for Napoli coach Rafa Benitez, with the winger having started in nine of his side's 11 Serie A games so far this season.

Insigne, who was set to be named in Antonio Conte's squad for Italy's upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier against Croatia, recently extended his contract with his club until June 2019.
