MLS lifts Impact's Wandrille Lefevre suspension after union grievance

Major League Soccer has lifted the suspension on Montreal Impact defender Wandrille Lefevre following a grievance filed by the players' union.

The Impact had suspended they 27-year-old on Tuesday after he posted on Instagram a photo of himself holding an air pistol. The caption, in French, referenced U.S. President Donald Trump: "With Donald now in power...better safe than sorry."

After the club announced it was suspending Lefevre, MLSPU executive director Bob Foose confirmed that the union had filed a grievance on the player's behalf, saying the team can't issue suspensions under the collective bargaining agreement.

A league statement on Friday said: "MLS has conducted a review concerning the post of Wandrille Lefevre, his suspension, and the Players Union's grievance. As part of that review, the League and Montreal have spoken with the player and expressed their concerns, and also heard the player's explanation.

"As a result of that review, and in light of the player's statement today, the suspension has been rescinded and Wandrille Lefevre is eligible to play this weekend."

Lefevre is in his fifth season with the Impact and is a product of the club's academy. He became a Canadian citizen in 2015, and has made two appearances with Canada's national team.

The Impact host Atlanta United on Saturday afternoon.
