Jonathan Woodgate returns to Middlesbrough as first-team coach

Former Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate has rejoined the club as first-team coach.

Woodgate, who had two spells with Middlesbrough as a player, is the latest addition to caretaker boss Steve Agnew's coaching staff following the appointments of Joe Jordan and Paul Jenkins.

The former England international, who retired as a player at the end of last season, arrives at the Riverside Stadium following a scouting role with Liverpool, in which he took in matches in Spain and Portugal for the club.

A Middlesbrough statement read: "Jonathan Woodgate has rejoined Boro as first-team coach.

"In a distinguished playing career that saw him represent Real Madrid and England, Woodgate enjoyed two spells with boyhood club Boro, announcing his retirement shortly after the Teessiders' promotion to the Premier League in May 2016.

"He becomes the latest addition to head coach Steve Agnew's coaching staff."

Agnew believes the experience of Woodgate -- who also played for Leeds, Newcastle, Tottenham and Stoke -- will help Middlesbrough in their fight against Premier League relegation.

"Jonathan is someone who we know very well, and who in turn knows this club inside and out," Agnew said. "He brings a wealth of experience from the highest level of the game, and he's a fantastic character. We're delighted to have him on board."

Middlesbrough currently sit 19th in the Premier League table, five points adrift of safety, and parted company with manager Aitor Karanka earlier this month.
