Former Spain and Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui is not an option for the vacant Mexican national team job at present, according to sources close to the federation (FMF) consulted by ESPN's Rene Tovar.
A report on Tuesday suggested that the FMF had already sounded out the Spaniard for El Tri. It added that Lopetegui's response was that he wanted to rest and recover before considering offers, with the 52-year-old only having left the Real Madrid job on Monday, after only three months in charge.
But sources inside the FMF denied that there has been contact and ruled him out as a candidate to take over from interim coach Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti, who will be in charge for the November friendlies against Argentina.
Atlanta United's Gerardo Martino is tipped to be the frontrunner for the Mexico job, with reports suggesting the Argentine has already verbally agreed to terms with the FMF. But ESPN Argentina reported on Monday that the Argentina national team is confident of securing the return of the Rosario native and is in regular contact with the former Barcelona manager.
Martino has confirmed he is leaving Atlanta United at the end of the MLS season.
