Mexico's Juan Carlos Osorio vows to attack in 'titanic task' vs. Brazil

SAMARA, Russia -- Mexico manager Juan Carlos Osorio sees attack as the best form of defense when El Tri takes on Brazil in Monday's round of 16 World Cup match.

Osorio's Mexico goes into the game as the underdog against one of the favorites to win the tournament as it looks to reach the quarterfinal stage for the first time since 1986.

"Tomorrow we'll try to dispute possession, we have midfielders with a lot of talent and we can utilize numeric superiority to keep the ball," said Osorio in Sunday's new conference.

"It is a titanic task against a great team, but we will try and when we can attack, with the game showing whether we can elaborate [plays] or counter-attack.

"But the idea is not to park the bus because Brazil has a lot of quality in the last third and they score goals, as they've shown against teams that have sat back."

Osorio described Brazil as the best national team in the world and doesn't think the fact past World Cup winners like Germany and Argentina are out of the tournament will have any bearing on Monday's round-of-16 game.

"I believe that Brazil have more than enough experience ... they play in top leagues and their manager is a top manager," said Osorio. "What happened to Germany is just one more reference... soccer is a game that always gives an opportunity to win.

"Collectively it is the sport that gives the team with less history a better chance to win a game because of the low scores.

"It's not [American] football, it's not rugby, it's not basketball, it's not baseball where the scores are so high that you can always anticipate who will be the winning team. Football is different.

"You just need to score one goal and many, many times you can defend and with that goal you can win the games.

"But I wouldn't take anything away from the big teams, it's just that football gives surprises all the time.

"A lot of people who don't understand the nature of the game, this beautiful game we are in has that as a main factor and the winning attitude of the team on a day can be decisive and win games."

Osorio is expected to name a similar side as the one that was defeated 3-0 by Sweden, although Brazil coach Tite confirmed that Marcelo will not be starting against El Tri as he recovers from his back problem.

Filipe Luis will take his place, with Brazil's starting XI: Alisson, Fagner, Thiago Silva, Miranda, Filipe Luis, Casemiro, Paulinho, Coutinho, Willian, Neymar and Gabriel Jesus.
