Carlos Vela included in Mexico squad to face United States in qualifier

Europe-based players dominate Juan Carlos Osorio's Mexico squad to face the United States in World Cup qualifying on Nov. 11, with Real Sociedad forward Carlos Vela returning for the first time in a year.

There are 13 Europe-based players, as well as in-form LA Galaxy forward Giovani dos Santos and only nine players from the Liga MX (two of whom have played in Europe).

Vela has played only one game since Osorio took charge in October 2015 and the forward who ruled himself out of the squad for the 2014 World Cup has netted three times in 10 appearances in La Liga this season.

Regulars such as Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, Hector Herrera, Andres Guardado, Miguel Layun and Hector Moreno were all included, as was 37-year-old defender Rafa Marquez.

Mexico has lost all four of its games in Columbus, Ohio, in World Cup qualifying against the United States, each by a scoreline of 2-0, although coach Osorio is confident that El Tri can alter that on Nov. 11.

"We see it as a fantastic opportunity to go there and change the story and break that statistic," said Osorio in an interview with ESPN FC earlier this week. "We'll play [against] a strong team, with their fans, in a stadium that historically hasn't been good for Mexico. But the opportunity is exactly that."
