Andres Guardado calls for Mexico to move on after 7-0 loss to Chile

For Mexico captain Andres Guardado, it is time to move on.

The wound from the 7-0 Copa America Centenario quarterfinal loss to Chile may be still raw and will take time to heal, but after the lessons are learned, he believes the team and players need to start looking ahead.

"It is something that is going to stay in the history of Mexican football, but we aren't going to do anything if we keep thinking of the 7-0 all our lives," said Guardado in an exclusive interview with ESPN's John Sutcliffe for Futbol Picante. "We have to turn the page and come back with more commitment to try to change and forget the 7-0."

Part of the process for PSV midfielder Guardado will be strengthening the mental side of the national team, with the 29-year-old stressing that Mexico face difficulties when it comes to important games.

"It's something mental," said Guardado, pointing to his head. "We haven't been able to get rid of the weight of history and say, 'We have to change this now.'"

Former Atlas player Guardado called the defeat "the worst" in the history of the national team and said he was embarrassed to face the media earlier this week to announce the foundation of his local Guadalajara charity.

Guardado also defended Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio, who was heavily criticised for his rotation of the squad during the Copa America and said the team trust the Colombian, despite the loss.

Mexico announced their final list for men's football at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics and Guardado's name was missing, even though there was talk the former Valencia midfielder was a top candidate for one of the three over-age spots.

"It was a dream that in PSV they wouldn't let me accomplish," explained Guardado about his possible participation in the Olympics.

The player tried to persuade the Dutch champions to let him go to both the Copa America and Rio Games, but PSV wouldn't allow one of their most prominent players to miss the earlier part of the Eredivisie season.

Guardado is expected back in the Netherlands with PSV for preseason training next week.
