Juan Carlos Osorio to continue as Mexico coach

Juan Carlos Osorio will remain as head coach of Mexico's national team, following a period of reflection after the Copa America Centenario quarterfinal 7-0 loss to Chile last Saturday.

The Mexican federation's (FMF) general secretary, Guillermo Cantu, held a news conference in Mexico City on Thursday to ratify Osorio, who was hired last October.

"Dismantling everything would be an error, which is why we've decide to continue with the project," said Cantu. "If we trust in the methodology of a person [Osorio], it is because those of us on the inside have seen it."

Cantu, Osorio and FMF president Decio de Maria met on Wednesday to discuss the fall-out from the historic loss, with Cantu saying that there were "heated" debates about the future of El Tri.

The FMF's general secretary also hinted that Osorio may have tendered his resignation.

"It was part of the reflection," said Cantu, adding that Osorio wasn't the only one to flirt with the idea of resigning.

Cantu confirmed there will be no changes to the coaching staff in the wake of the defeat and said he doesn't have any problem with the rotations Osorio has employed in his time in charge of Mexico.

"The results at this Copa America were a failure, but the project is Russia 2018," said Cantu. "In order to strengthen, we have to trust in the team, with its leader Juan Carlos Osorio."

Mexico's heaviest loss in an official competition came off the back of a 22-match unbeaten streak. El Tri's next match is away in El Salvador in World Cup qualifying, followed by a home game against Honduras.
