SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Mexico winger Javier Aquino is set to miss El Tri's Copa America Centenario quarterfinal against Chile on Saturday, following his injury during the final group stage match against Venezuela.
Mexico team doctor Jose Luis Serrano confirmed Aquino's left thigh injury on Wednesday, but the Tigres player will be staying with the squad in case El Tri reaches the semifinals of the competition.
"He's responded very well, he's been walking normally," Serrano said outside of the team's hotel. "But he feels pain with some movements. As of now, he won't be available on Saturday."
Serrano added that Aquino, who was forced off with the injury in the 18th minute of Mexico's 1-1 tie against Venezuela on Monday, doesn't have any muscle complications and will be evaluated again on Saturday to see exactly how long he will be out.
The news leaves Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio short of options on the wing against the reigning Copa America champion, with Hirving Lozano, Jesus "Tecatito" Corona and Candido Ramirez the only other wingers in the squad, although Raul Jimenez has also played on the right.
The rest of Mexico's squad trained without Aquino in the San Jose Earthquakes' Avaya Stadium on Wednesday morning in preparation for the clash in Levi's Stadium.
Rafa Marquez will be another absentee from Thursday's training session, with the Mexico captain having been given special permission to travel back to Guadalajara on Wednesday for the birth of his child. Marquez will return to El Tri's camp either Thursday evening or Friday morning, according to a statement from the Mexican federation.
