Mexico's Miguel Herrera already focused on Confederations Cup playoff

PHILADELPHIA -- Mexico lifted the Gold Cup on Sunday after defeating Jamaica 3-1 at Lincoln Financial Field, but coach Miguel Herrera was quick to turn attention ahead to the playoff in October against the United States for a place in the Confederations Cup in Russia in 2017.

"In October there is a very important game [against the United States]," said Herrera in his postgame news conference, stressing the United States is a strong team. "We can't get carried away.

"Obviously we are obligated to get the victory, it'll be a difficult match," he added.

Goals from Andres Guardado, Jesus "Tecatito" Corona and Oribe Peralta handed El Tri victory in a final in which it dominated in large parts, having benefited from some dubious penalty decisions in reaching Philadelphia.

"Who wouldn't like everything to be rose-colored?" asked Herrera when pushed on whether he would've preferred a smoother path to the trophy.

Herrera picked out Andres Guardado, who was named player of the tournament by CONCACAF, as being a key figure in Mexico winning the Gold Cup for the seventh time.

"Guardado had a great tournament and he is in his prime as a footballer," said Herrera. "He reaffirmed the great year he had in Holland."

Mexico's playoff against the United States is scheduled to be on Oct. 9, likely in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, according to reports.
