Jesus Corona, Memo Ochoa to divide goalkeeping duties in Mexico friendlies

Mexico goalkeepers Guillermo Ochoa and Jesus Corona will have one game each to impress in upcoming friendlies against Ecuador and Paraguay in the United States, coach Miguel Herrera said.

The duo also battled it out for a starting spot ahead of last year's World Cup in Brazil, before Malaga keeper Ochoa got the nod and impressed at the tournament.

But Ochoa has found playing time hard to come by in Spain this season, while Corona was left off the Mexico squad in October.

The domestic-based Mexican national team players set off on Monday morning from Mexico City to prepare for their first match of 2015 in Los Angeles, with the notable absence of Cruz Azul center back Francisco "Maza" Rodriguez.

"He has a personal problem," Herrera told reporters at the airport, pointing out that he had spoken to the World Cup veteran and he required players that would be "focused" on the friendly games.

Rodriguez didn't appear in Cruz Azul's 2-1 victory on Saturday over Club Tijuana in Liga MX.

Rayo Vallecano's Javier Aquino missed out on the squad list altogether, with Herrera explaining that he had spoken to the winger and wants to evaluate different options in his position.

"I want to see Jurgen Damm," Herrera said. "I can't bring so many right-sided players and [Jesus] 'Tecatito' Corona, who I've only seen in one game, is here."

Herrera added that he has been impressed with Luis Montes' form of late and that the Leon midfielder, who missed the World Cup because of a broken leg suffered in a pre-tournament friendly against Ecuador, will be taken into consideration for future call-ups.

The Europe-based players began arriving in Los Angeles on Sunday evening and the full El Tri squad is set to train together on Tuesday morning.

Over 75,000 tickets have already been sold for Saturday's match against Ecuador at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. El Tri then play Paraguay on March 31 in Kansas City, Mo.
