Real Sociedad's Carlos Vela to play on Mexico squad for November friendlies

Real Sociedad striker Carlos Vela has agreed to play on Mexico's squad for November friendlies against Netherlands and Belarus, marking his first return to El Tri after a three-year absence, coach Miguel Herrera confirmed.

"He's excited to come back, he is committed and ready to give us everything he knows," Herrera told ESPN La Revista. "If you are criticising him because he has not spoken about the team in a favorable light, then I agree with you, but he is the best player we have in Europe and Mexico."

Vela was nominated, along with Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego Costa for La Liga's Best Forward of 2013-14, an award that went to Ronaldo.

"There was a reason he was nominated for best forward with Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego Costa," said Herrera. "They included Vela but not [Lionel] Messi. He has great talent."

Vela has not played for the Mexico national team since March 29, 2011, in a friendly against Venezuela. Back in February, he turned down an offer to play on Mexico's World Cup team. The 24-year-old striker also reportedly turned down a call-up from former Mexico coach Jose Manuel de la Torre during CONCACAF qualifying in 2013.

Mexico's squad of European league players also includes Malaga goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, Real Madrid striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, FC Porto's Hector Herrera and Diego Reyes, PSV Eindhoven's Andres Guardado, the Villarreal duo of brothers Giovani and Jonathan Dos Santos, Atletico Madrid's Raul Jimenez and FC Twente's Jesus Manuel Corona.

The Mexican league players on the squad will be named next week.

Last week, Vela hinted during a Real Sociedad news conference, that he was too busy with his club's commitments to consider the Mexico recall.

Mexico and Netherlands meet on Nov. 12 in Amsterdam, less than five months after the teams faced off in the second round of the World Cup in Brazil.

It will be the eighth game between the nations, and first since the Dutch won 2-1 at the World Cup.

Mexico will also play a friendly at Belarus on Nov. 18 in its final match of 2014. El Tri hasn't played a friendly in Europe since 2010, when it faced Italy in Belgium ahead of the World Cup in South Africa.
