Mexico recall Real Sociedad's Carlos Vela for November friendlies

Real Sociedad winger Carlos Vela was included on Tuesday in Mexico's call-up of European league players for November friendlies vs. Netherlands and Belarus.

The list also includes Malaga goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, Real Madrid striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, FC Porto's Hector Herrera and Diego Reyes, PSV Eindhoven's Andres Guardado, the Villarreal duo of brothers Giovani and Jonathan Dos Santos, Atletico Madrid's Raul Jimenez and FC Twente's Jesus Manuel Corona.

The Mexican league players on the squad will be named next week.

Vela has not played for the Mexico national team since March 29, 2011, for a friendly against Venezuela. Back in February, he turned down an offer to play on Mexico's World Cup team. The 24-year-old striker also reportedly turned down a call-up from former Mexico coach Jose Manuel de la Torre during CONCACAF qualifying in 2013.

"He has no excuse," said El Tri coach Miguel Herrera last week, speaking about Vela on ESPN's "Raza Deportiva." "The time for giving concessions to Carlos Vela is up. If he's starting games, he's ready, in our opinion."

Herrera was reacting to statements made by Vela at a recent Real Sociedad news conference, where he claimed he was only focused on and preoccupied with the situation of his club team (second-to-last in the Spanish league with five points in eight matches).

Mexico and Netherlands will play the friendly less than five months after the teams met in the second round of the World Cup in Brazil.

The Mexican football federation said Wednesday the match will be played Nov. 12 in Amsterdam.

It will be the eighth game between the nations, and first since the Dutch won 2-1 at the World Cup.

Mexico will also play a friendly at Belarus six days later in its final match of 2014. El Tri hadn't played a friendly in Europe since 2010, when it faced Italy in Belgium ahead of the World Cup in South Africa.
