Ex-Mexico manager Miguel Herrera wants to work in Europe

Former Mexico coach Miguel Herrera has his sights set on winning trophies with current club America in Liga MX and then moving on to Europe.

Herrera left El Tri after he was fired for swinging a punch at a commentator in a Philadelphia airport in 2015, but has never denied he would like to one day return, although his career goals aren't focused exclusively on the Mexican national team.

"My project has another ambition," the 49-year-old Herrera said in an interview with ESPN's Raza Deportiva. "[I want] to do well at America to project myself and try to jump the pond [to Europe]."

Herrera stated he has previously had offers from Asia and an approach from the Greek national team, but nothing from European clubs.

"No club has approached me to manage in Europe," related Herrera, who took Mexico to the Round of 16 in the 2014 World Cup. "After achieving and winning titles with America, right now the goal is to try to make that jump to manage in Europe."

The former Atlante coach said he would be open to a number of leagues, stressing money wasn't the objective and repeating that he is happy with Las Aguilas for the time being.

Herrera moved back to Club America for the 2017 Apertura after a successful stint at Club Tijuana and the team has quickly clicked, sitting in second place after five rounds of matches.
