FMF confirms Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti will not be next Mexico coach

Tigres coach Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti is no longer in the running to become the Mexico national team head coach, the Mexican federation (FMF) announced on Tuesday.

"Unfortunately, we've been notified by Tigres of the impossibility of considering Ricardo Ferretti as a candidate to manage the Mexican national team on a permanent basis," read a statement from the FMF.

Ferretti will still take charge of next month's games against Costa Rica (Oct. 11) and Chile (Oct. 16) and would be available to step in for the friendlies in November should the FMF have not hired a new coach by then.

The FMF also suggested that it is in the "final stretch" of the process of hiring a replacement for Juan Carlos Osorio and that "important candidates" have been talked to.

FMF president Yon de Luisa said last Friday that they had interviewed 15 candidates in person and nine over the phone.

The experienced Ferretti had appeared to leave the door open to staying on with Mexico after friendlies earlier this month against the United States and Uruguay and was considered the leading candidate, having forged his coaching career in Liga MX.

Other names mentioned as possible incoming Mexico managers include Matias Almeyda, Jorge Sampaoli and Gerardo Martino.
