Ricardo Ferretti: Tigres will enjoy Campeones win, then think Monterrey

TORONTO -- Tigres coach Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti was in no mood to be discussing Sunday's Clasico Regio against arch-rival Monterrey on Wednesday, instead insisting that he needs some time to celebrate the 3-1 Campeones Cup victory over Toronto FC.

Tigres won the inaugural edition of the tournament at BMO Field after two goals from Jesus Duenas and an own goal from Toronto's Eriq Zavaleta, with Lucas Janson scoring a late penalty consolation for TFC.

"I'm not thinking about Sunday, at least let me enjoy this," joked Ferretti when asked about the upcoming Liga MX game. "Hold on, brother. Give me two hours or five hours, or wait for tomorrow [to ask]."

Tigres were knocked out at the quarterfinal stage of the CONCACAF Champions League by Toronto last season in what was a bitter blow for the Liga MX side looking for its first continental title, but Ferretti thought his team played much better this time around against a Toronto team that has struggled in MLS of late.

"It was a good win," said Ferretti. "Today in the Campeones Cup we did things a lot better than last time.

"It wasn't at all easy, it was very complicated because Toronto is a good team and I have to recognize the quality of the opposition. I think that we both chased the game, but we were more accurate.

"In the second half they had some opportunities but I think that in general we knew how to counter their threats and their will to do well at home and we got the goals on the counter to help us be able to control the game."

Tigres return to Monterrey on a charter plane in the early hours of Thursday morning to begin preparation for Sunday's derby, with Ferretti indicating that he hopes Tigres will be in the next edition of the Campeones Cup.
