Liga MX seeks VAR implementation in time for '18 Apertura playoffs

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology is set to be implemented in Liga MX as early as this year, the Mexican federation announced on Monday.

The federation needs to obtain a certificate from The International Football Association Board (IFAB) to be able to use the technology officially, but will be carrying out tests with the hope of obtaining it in time for the 2018 Apertura playoffs in November.

Tests will start on Tuesday in the Liga MX's Under-20s league, with the pilot program in the full Liga MX taking place over weeks 13 and 14 of matches this Apertura.

The IFAB will be present during rounds 15 and 16 of matches to decide whether or not Liga MX has earned the certificate.

"We can't be certain that they'll certify us, but we've worked very hard on this, we've done many hours of works and [used] many resources," said Gilberto Hernandez, general secretary of the FMF in a news conference.

Liga MX owners will then decide whether to implement VAR in the final round of matches of the Apertura regular season and the playoffs, or wait until next year.
