Andoni Zubizarreta named new Marseille sporting director

Marseille have named Andoni Zubizarreta as their new sporting director.

Zubizarreta previously did the same job at Barcelona between 2010 and 2015, when he was responsible for the arrivals of Javier Mascherano, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Ivan Rakitic.

He was presented to the media by Marseille president Jacques-Henri Eyraud on Thursday, telling reporters: "I'm happy to be in a club with so much personality as OM. I hope I will live up to the trust placed in me."

The move comes as new owner Frank McCourt continues his overhaul of the Ligue 1 club and follows the appointment of Rudi Garcia as coach.

Gunter Jacob, who was only appointed three months ago, was removed from his role as sporting director on Wednesday to make way for Zubizarreta.

Former Los Angeles Dodgers owner McCourt has said he intends to take Marseille back to the summit of both domestic and European football.

"The goal is to win the league," the American businessman told L'Equipe.

"My number one goal is to win Ligue 1, the second is to win the title more often than we don't and the third is to win the Champions League. We have to manage to do that in that order."
