Jean-Pierre Papin wants to help Marseille return to top in France

Marseille legend Jean-Pierre Papin has said he would like to return to the club to help them get back to their former glory.

The 2010 French champions have had a dramatic season and only secured their top-flight status with a 1-0 win at Angers on Sunday.

Papin, 52, won the Ballon d'Or award in 1991 while at Marseille and the former striker also picked up four Ligue 1 winners' medals with the club.

The former France forward told beIN Sports that he is "sad" to see Marseille struggle so much. He also believes that the 1993 European champions have to provide a challenge for Paris Saint-Germain in order for there to be any real interest in Ligue 1.

Papin has had a mixed record as manager of clubs like Strasbourg, Lens and Chateauroux, but he said that he would be willing to return to Marseille in any role.

"I think I want to invest myself in the club," he said. "I want to help it recover what it gave me so much of during all those years.

"Once you've worn these colours, it never leaves you indifferent. And at the moment the club doesn't deserve its situation.

"It's true that I want to give back a little bit of what it brought me."

Marseille do have a Coupe de France final against league champions PSG to look forward to on May 21.

But they have gone seven months without a league win at home and last month they relieved manager Michel of his duties.

Owner Margarita Louis-Dreyfus also announced recently that she is putting the club up for sale.
