Michy Batshuayi should be starting games for Marseille - Basile Boli

Former Marseille defender Basile Boli has criticised coach Michel for leaving top scorer Michy Batshuayi out of the team.

Boli, who scored the winning goal for Marseille in the 1993 Champions League final, voiced his frustration after a 0-0 draw with Bordeaux on Sunday left the club without a home win since September.

L'Equipe quoted Boli, now an official ambassador for the club, as saying he was disappointed that Michel had chosen to start on-loan Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher and only use Belgium international Batshuayi as a substitute.

"We have a player who has scored 15 or 16 goals since the beginning of the season who's not starting," he said.

"There are a lot of things that aren't working. There are players who have more experience than others in difficult moments -- we should rely on those players.

"Marseille is a city that lives for its team. With performances like that, the fans blow a fuse. I can understand them. They've been waiting months for a win -- they're cracking up."

Home supporters called for the resignation of club president Vincent Labrune and the departure of owner Margarita Louis-Dreyfus during Saturday's game.

The 2010 French champions have now gone a club record 14 league games without a win at home, taking 16 points from a possible 51 in front of their own supporters this season.

They are six points ahead of the relegation zone, and captain Steve Mandanda told Canal Plus: "We need three more points to ensure we stay up.

"We shouldn't bury our head in the sand any longer. Maybe we have less quality than in previous years."

Following a crisis meeting last week, Marseille announced that former Spanish international Michel would be retained until the end of the season.

He called on his players to win the Coupe de France as they prepare for a semifinal against Sochaux later this month.

Speaking at a postmatch news conference, he said: "We have a debt to them [the fans] and we have a clear goal for the end of the season -- the Coupe de France.

"We've put ourselves in this position in the table, and now it's up to us to face up to it. The atmosphere has been difficult for a few matches."
