Marseille coach Marcelo Bielsa refuses credit for Gignac, Payet form

Marseille manager Marcelo Bielsa was unwilling to take the credit after Andre-Pierre Gignac and Dimitri Payet earned a recall to the France squad on Thursday.

Gignac, 28, and Payet, 27, have flourished since the Argentine coach arrived in Marseille this summer, helping to steer Les Phocéens to the top of Ligue 1.

Both players have been rewarded with a place in a 23-man squad for the Euro 2016 hosts' upcoming matches against Portugal and Armenia.

Gignac's eight league goals this season are bettered only by Cristiano Ronaldo's tally of 10 across Europe's top five leagues but Bielsa, 59, played down his own influence.

"I think that Gignac has reached the level he's at because of his own personal effort," Bielsa told a news conference.

"I'm aware of the effect that my training has on the players that are available to me.

"But in this particular case, and also in the case of Payet, the credit goes only to them and the efforts that they have made."

Gignac was infamously teased by fans over his weight in the past but the striker has lost five kilos in recent months. Bielsa says that the leaner look is not down to him.

"If it was thanks to me, I'd apply the same method myself," he joked.

Meanwhile, Toulouse boss Alain Casanova says he always felt that Gignac could become a top player. On Casanova's watch during the 2008-2009 season, Gignac scored a league-high 24 goals for Toulouse.

"I always thought he had the potential to be one of the best strikers in Europe," Casanova told L'Equipe.

"When he's in good physical and mental shape, spared from injury and confident, he's one of the best there is."

Gignac was unpopular with Marseille fans during his first couple of seasons at the club but Casanova believes that the striker's strong strength of character helped him to get through it.

"Other people would have weakened, got frightened and most likely left the club. But he's a gladiator who likes to go battle," he concluded.
