Manchester United's Paul Pogba only a substitute for Sevilla clash

Paul Pogba has only been named among the Manchester United substitutes against Sevilla, with Jose Mourinho saying he needed players at "100 percent" for their Champions League round-of-16 opener.

The Frenchman missed the win over Huddersfield on Saturday because of illness. But after returning to training on Sunday, the midfielder travelled with the rest of the squad to Spain on Tuesday.

Mourinho suggested at his news conference on Tuesday evening that the 24-year-old was fit to start the Champions League round-of-16 first leg. But before the match the United boss told BT Sport: "You always go to the one who doesn't start.

"[Scott] McTominay is working hard every day, feeling strong, played the last match for 90 minutes, Paul last Saturday was unable to play. We believe this is the kind of game where we need players to be 100 percent.

"Paul gave us some doubts by not playing last Saturday, by his own decision, he was not feeling good."

Sources had told ESPN FC that Pogba had not been selected to face Sevilla, as Mourinho instead opted for a midfield three of Nemanja Matic, 21-year-old McTominay and Ander Herrera, who has missed the last three games with a thigh injury.

Pogba has been substituted on his last two starts for United against Tottenham and Newcastle. He was left out of the team for the 2-0 win over Huddersfield in the Premier League on Feb. 3 before coming on as a 65th-minute substitute.

Sevilla: Rico, Navas, Lenglet, Mercado, Escudero, N'Zonzi, Vazquez, Sarabia, Banega, Correa, Muriel

Man United: De Gea, Valencia, Lindelof, Smalling, Young, Matic, Herrera, McTominay, Mata, Lukaku, Sanchez.
