Wayne Rooney can play bit-part role at Manchester United - Ryan Giggs

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs says Wayne Rooney could have a future at the club if he can accept a bit-part role.

Rooney, 31, had been expected to leave United this summer after having limited impact under Jose Mourinho last season, and has been heavily linked with moves to former club Everton or China.

However, his former teammate Giggs, who retired at 40 to become Louis van Gaal's assistant at United, said Rooney could yet have a future at Old Trafford.

"Wayne is a proven goal scorer," Giggs told Sky Sports News. "Give him a chance, Wayne will score.

"It is whether he can put up with not being first choice or whether he can develop his game, which I had to around the same age -- not being certain to play every game, but playing 25-30 games and contributing.

"If Wayne can do that then I don't see why he can't still be at the club."

Rooney, who has two years remaining on his United contract, made 25 Premier League appearances last season, scoring five goals and providing five assists. He also appeared seven times in the Europa League, with two goals and three assists, and seven times in domestic cup competitions, scoring once.

Meanwhile, former United captain Gary Neville says he is surprised Rooney has not clarified his future already with less than two weeks to go before the club start their preseason tour of the United States.

He told ITV: "It's interesting, I thought there would have been a statement about Wayne Rooney's future out already. I thought it would have been out pretty quickly at the end of the season to stop this void, this speculation.

"I would imagine it's going to happen quickly. They are going to have to announce it, whether they're going to keep him for next season or he's going to move somewhere else.

"Sometimes these moves, if he is going to move, take time. Sometimes the player needs time to reflect because it's a big decision to leave.

"I'm surprised it hasn't been dealt with already."

Last month, Rooney said he had "more or less" decided his future.

"There's lots of offers on the table, both in England [and] abroad, and really that's what I have to decide on," he added. "I've played for two Premier League clubs and they're the only two Premier League clubs I'll play for."
