Wayne Rooney on Manchester United's bench in second leg against Anderlecht

Wayne Rooney will start from the bench in Manchester United's Europa League quarterfinal second-leg tie against Anderlecht on Thursday.

The 31-year-old was omitted from the squad to face Anderlecht in the Europa League quarterfinal first leg last week, and was out of Jose Mourinho's squads against Saint Etienne and FC Rostov in the round of 32 and round of 16 in the competition.

On Wednesday, Mourinho told reporters Rooney could still play a part in United's bid to win the Europa League, but that the England captain must prove he is over the "small problems" that have dogged him all season.

Rooney had been sidelined with a double ankle injury since making a substitute appearance against West Brom on April 1, but the forward has not started a game for United since the 1-1 draw against Bournemouth at the beginning of March.

In all, United have made five changes to the starting XI from Sunday's win against Chelsea, as Sergio Romero, Luke Shaw, Michael Carrick, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have been picked to take the field against the Belgian side.

Full starting XIs:

Manchester United: Romero, Valencia, Bailly, Rojo, Shaw, Carrick, Pogba, Rashford, Mkhitaryan, Lingard, Ibrahimovic

Anderlecht: Martinez, Appiah, Mbodji, Spajic, Obradovic, Chipciu, Tielemans, Dendoncker, Hanni, Acheampong, Teodorczyk
