Jose Mourinho: Man United 'need a big transfer window' this summer

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says the club will need to spend big this summer to improve their squad ahead of next season.

United currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, seven points off the top four, but could also qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League this term.

Mourinho splashed out £157 million on transfers following his appointment at United last summer, and he says they will need to do something similar this year if they are to really challenge for the top honours next season.

"We had just one transfer window, we didn't use the second transfer window [in January]. We need a big transfer window again," Mourinho is quoted as saying by the Sunday Mirror.

United face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday looking to close the gap on the top four.

Mourinho's side are currently on a 20-game unbeaten run in the Premier League, but he feels had they converted some of their draws into victories then things would be looking more positive at Old Trafford.

"We have far to go. When you're speaking about the 20-game unbeaten run, if you were speaking about just three more victories, then it would be different," Mourinho said.

"I'm not talking about winning four, five, six or seven more games, just three. Against Bournemouth we missed a penalty. Hull crossed the midfield line once in 94 minutes. Both games were zero-zero.

"And there were other games like that. With just three more victories, we'd be quite stable in the top four with two matches in hand and playing to finish second or third. So what we have now is not bad at all -- details make it look worse than it really is."
