Wayne Rooney not included in Man United squad to face St Etienne

Wayne Rooney has not been named in Manchester United's squad to face St Etienne in the Europa League on Wednesday despite returning to training with the club on Tuesday, while Luke Shaw also misses out.

Rooney, 31, had appeared to put himself in contention for the round-of-32 second leg after resuming training following a muscle strain.

However, the England captain has not been included in Jose Mourinho's 20-man squad for the clash, which United head into with a 3-0 advantage from the first leg.

Rooney has not started a game for United since the FA Cup fourth-round win at home to Wigan Athletic on Jan. 29 and has not appeared at all since the 0-0 Premier League draw against Hull City on Feb. 1.

The United captain, whose absence has led to renewed speculation that he could move to the Chinese Super League before next Tuesday's Chinese transfer deadline, will be hoping to make his return to action in  the EFL Cup final against Southampton at Wembley on Sunday.

Shaw, who has made just one appearance for United since November, has also failed to make the squad to face St Etienne, with Matteo Darmian having been left at home as well.

Ander Herrera misses out on a place in the squad due to suspension, while Phil Jones is absent due to injury.

Manchester United squad: De Gea, O'Hara, Romero, Bailly, Blind, Fosu-Mensah, Rojo, Smalling, Valencia, Young, Carrick, Fellaini, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Pogba, Lingard, Schweinsteiger, Ibrahimovic, Martial, Rashford.
