Manchester United's Marcus Rashford: Playing wide 'helping my game'

Marcus Rashford has said that playing out wide for Manchester United, rather than as a striker, will help him in the long run.

Rashford, 19, regularly played as a striker in his breakthrough campaign last season under former United manager Louis van Gaal, scoring eight goals in 18 appearances in all competitions.

Van Gaal's successor Jose Mourinho has regularly shunted him out to the wing though, meaning that Rashford has not been as prolific this season, scoring four in 19 in all competitions.

"Playing out wide is going to help me to develop to play in the middle in the long run," he told Sky Sports. "Looking at the game from a different perspective, it's helping my game a lot.

"When I do get a chance to go in the middle, I find things more natural now. I do think it's helping my game."

Mourinho's recruitment of the 35-year-old Zlatan Ibrahimovic, United's first-choice striker, has curtailed Rashford's opportunities to play centrally up front. The Englishman, however, believes that the arrival of the Swede has helped him.

"He's [Zlatan] spoken to us a lot about things he's come up against in the past and you have to listen because he's been there, he's done it and he's won a lot of trophies and that's what we all want to do," Rashford said. "He's looked after his body well since he was a young professional. That's why he can still play at this age now.

"It's a small thing and one that a lot of people don't look at but for him to be playing and still competing at that age is amazing."

United have been struggling to keep pace with the leading sides so far this season, positioned in sixth in the Premier League and nine points adrift of the top four. They face a home game against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday -- who are six points clear of Mourinho's men.

"United are going through a bit of a transition at the moment," Rashford added. "At times like this, everyone has to stick together and then come out together on top. We have to concentrate as a team and try to bring home the trophies this season."
