Man United's Marcos Rojo deserved red card vs. Everton - former top refs

Marcos Rojo's challenge on Idrissa Gueye has been described as "reckless" and "serious" by former referees, who feel the Manchester United defender should have been sent off.

Rojo dived in, two-footed, on the Everton midfielder during the sides' 1-1 draw in the Premier League at Goodison Park on Sunday. The score was goalless at the time and referee Michael Oliver chose to book the book the Argentine.

Former referees' chief Keith Hackett wrote in the Telegraph: "[Michael Oliver] is a growing referee, with a really nice style, but that challenge by Marcos Rojo has no place on the field of play. It is beyond me how four match officials failed to see that it had everything required to merit a red card.

"It was an easy decision: he was off the ground with two feet, it was reckless, dangerous, he should have gone. Why Michael didn't issue a red card frankly bemused me."

And former World Cup final referee Howard Webb told The Times: "Rojo's tackle on Gueye was a clear red card. "Michael Oliver is a really great referee and he will be gutted when he sees it back.

"As soon as a player leaves the ground and jumps in with two feet, studs-first, straight legs, it's a red-card offence. It is serious foul play because he will be using excessive force and endangering the safety of the opponent."
