Man United's Jose Mourinho wanted red card for tackle on Memphis Depay

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho continued his complaints about referees by saying that his team should have been playing against 10 men in their 3-1 win against Northampton Town -- after a "dangerous" challenge on Memphis Depay.

Northampton midfielder Jak McCourt produced a reckless challenge on the Dutchman early in the second half, while the score was 1-1, but he was only booked by referee Stuart Attwell. Mourinho also complained about the officiating decisions against his team when United lost against Manchester City and Watford.

Mourinho told Sky Sports: "It was difficult, as I was expecting, but were in control for the first 35 minutes and the last 35 minutes. The subs [Marcus Rashford and Zlatan Ibrahimovic] were just a contribution.

"The game could and should have been easier. Normally it's easier against ten men and we should have been playing against 10 men early in the second half. But they fought, they played with their strength.

"I should stop speaking about refereeing decisions and wait for you to speak about them, some with honest vision, some with dishonest vision.

"It's a dangerous situation. It could have been an important injury."

Although Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera both scored against Northampton and were impressive, Mourinho avoided fuelling speculation that they had helped their starting chances.

The United manager said: "I don't like to individualise the players. The midfield were in control. I swapped [Marouane] Fellaini with [Morgan] Schneiderlin and I think the performance was fine."

Carrick denied that he had to prove himself, having not played in the Premier League yet this season. The United midfielder said that the manager already knows what he can do and that it is a squad game anyway.

He said: "You play some games you miss some games. People need to calm down over the squad changes. We're all in it together."

The victory over Northampton ended a run of three successive defeats in all competitions for United, which Mourinho admitted had damaged confidence. This result will provide a boost ahead of facing Leicester City at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday.

Herrera said: "After a terrible week, we got the victory and we can face Leicester in a better way. When you come to play these types of games [against Northampton], it is not easy for us but the we controlled the game completely in the second half and we are very happy."
