Michael Carrick has backed the appointment of Jose Mourinho and said that, while Manchester United's playing style remains an important part of the club's identity, winning must come first right now. United, 13-time winners of the Premier League, have failed to win the title since Sir Alex Ferguson's final campaign in 2012-13 and, for the second time since the Scot's exit, they will not play Champions League football next season. Carrick is certain United have the right man to put them back in a position of strength with Mourinho, though, telling Sky Sports: "His track record speaks for itself. "I think it's a good fit. It's about winning at the end of the day. I know there's a lot of talk about styles and playing this way or that way, but it's about winning, it's about being No. 1. "It's about winning trophies and if we can do that with a bit of style and a bit of flair then obviously that's the perfect match. But first and foremost it's about winning and getting back on top." There has been speculation about who Mourinho could appoint to his backroom staff and which players may sign or depart, but Carrick believes that is part of the process of changing manager. He said: "There is going to be change without a doubt. He [Mourinho] is coming in and he's his own man. He's got an unbelievable track record. "Everyone is looking for quick results and that's how it is. I'm not sure exactly on the situation of who he's bringing in or anything like that just yet. We'll have to wait and see on that one." Carrick is out of contract this summer but a source close to the club told ESPN FC last week that he is set to be offered a new deal, and the midfielder hopes to stay on for an 11th season at Old Trafford. "I'm hopeful [of staying]," he said. "There's no news as yet but we'll have to wait and see what happens next week. "I haven't got a timescale on it to be honest. This week has been a bit crazy with the new manager so I've come away to get away from it. We'll take it up next week."
