Louis van Gaal set to earn £5 million if Man United sack him - report

Louis van Gaal would lose out on more than £1 million if Manchester United fail to qualify for the Champions League, though he would earn £5m if he's sacked, according to a report in The Times.

The newspaper states that the Dutchman is on an £8m salary, based on a series of performance-related, loyalty and image rights clauses -- but only £3.3m of that is guaranteed basic pay.

It also reports that there will be a £5m payoff -- 66 percent of his salary -- if he is sacked before his contract runs out after next season, unless he should take another job before then.

United are currently fifth in the Premier League, four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City with a game in hand. They must obtain a top-four finish to return to the Champions League next season.

They are also in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace on May 21, with Van Gaal in line for a £400,000 bonus should United win, the Times said.

Van Gaal has already missed out on reported £1.5m bonuses for winning either the Champions League or Premier League, or half that if United were runners-up.
