Phil Jones, Adnan Januzaj, Guillermo Varela added to Man United injury list

Manchester United have suffered a triple injury blow and will head to Sunderland on Saturday without eight sidelined players.

And United manager Louis van Gaal is refusing to provide a date for when Bastian Schweinsteiger will return as the Germany captain's knee problem continues to rule him out.

Van Gaal lost Adnan Januzaj, Guillermo Varela and Phil Jones when all three were hurt in the Red Devils' 7-0 under-21 win over Norwich on Monday.

"They're not nasty injuries but I have to give them time to recover," Van Gaal told MUTV.

Centre-back Jones, whose last first-team game came on Jan. 2, was making his return after an ankle injury with the U21 team but has now suffered a setback.

Winger Januzaj, who is yet to start for United's senior side since returning from an unsuccessful loan spell at Borussia Dortmund, and right-back Varela both went off in the first half on Monday with problems.

Midfielder Schweinsteiger has already missed six games and now seems set to sit out the Premier League game with Sunderland, the FA Cup trip to Shrewsbury and both legs of the Europa League round-of-32 tie with FC Midtjylland.

United face Arsenal on Feb. 28 and Van Gaal is unsure if the former Bayern Munich player will be available for the clash at Old Trafford.

"I cannot say Bastian is returning in two weeks," he said. "I have given him a holiday."

The Dutchman, however, had better news on Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia, who will both return to action soon.

"There is light at the end of the tunnel for Rojo and Valencia -- they are coming back and I hope to have them as soon as possible," Van Gaal said.

Rojo, who underwent shoulder surgery, has not played since November, while Valencia, who had a foot operation, has not played since October.

Two other full-backs, Luke Shaw and Ashley Young, remain sidelined.
