Phil Jones returns to Man United training but won't face Chelsea

Phil Jones has returned to training but he and Bastian Schweinsteiger have been ruled out of Manchester United's clash with Chelsea on Sunday.

Midfielder Schweinsteiger has missed United's last five games with the knee injury he sustained in the FA Cup victory over Sheffield United and the Germany international remains sidelined.

Centre-back Jones has only played once in 2016, sitting out the six matches since the win over Swansea with an ankle problem, but Van Gaal sees an end to his injury problems.

"There is some light at the end of the tunnel, I think," the manager told MUTV at the Aon Training Complex on Friday afternoon. "Jones is coming back. He has trained today [Friday] with the first team so that's good. Schweinsteiger is still out, yes."

Marcos Rojo, who required a shoulder operation, could be the first of the full-backs to return but that will not be imminent as he cannot train yet.

Ashley Young, who has undergone groin surgery, Antonio Valencia, who had a foot operation, and Luke Shaw, who suffered a double leg break, remain long-term absentees.

Van Gaal said both Shaw and Valencia are progressing without incident, adding: "Rojo is doing well. It's not that he can train with us but, still, he is doing well. Shaw is doing well and Valencia is doing well so it's not bad."
