Manchester United's Matteo Darmian 'fine' after injury vs. Southampton

Matteo Darmian has allayed Manchester United's fears he faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines by declaring he is "fine" after being hospitalised on Saturday.

Darmian was taken off in the 1-0 defeat to Southampton after spitting blood following a mid-air collision with Shane Long.

And manager Louis van Gaal said he was worried it was a serious injury, saying the former Torino player had problems with one rib and his chest.

He said in a news conference: "He was spitting blood. It looks like his rib and his chest, but we have to wait and see as I cannot say. It was not a nice view for the players to see that."

But the Italy international right-back calmed concerns about his condition on Twitter.

The 26-year-old's statement should be welcomed by Van Gaal, who feared all five of his senior full-backs were injured at the same time.

Luke Shaw, who has a broken leg, Antonio Valencia, who had foot surgery, Marcos Rojo, who had a shoulder operation, and Ashley Young, who has a serious groin injury, all face lengthy spells on the sidelines.

Van Gaal said on Friday that he wanted to sign another full-back and that search would have been more urgent if Darmian had been sidelined.

Instead, it remains to be seen if he will be able to keep his place for Friday's FA Cup tie against Championship promotion contenders Derby County.
