Manchester United's Wayne Rooney 'doesn't look in great shape' - Keane

Roy Keane has launched a scathing attack on Wayne Rooney, declaring that the Manchester United captain is not in the right physical or mental shape.

Rooney said United needed to be more ruthless after their 0-0 Champions League draw with PSV Eindhoven -- but former skipper Keane said the 30-year-old, who has scored only twice in his last 10 club games, needed to address his own form.

Rooney is the joint second-highest scorer in United's history with 237 goals and has a record 51 goals for England, but Keane feels his off-field activities are affecting his performances.

"Mentally he doesn't look sharp, physically he doesn't look in a great shape. He has to have a look at himself," Keane said on ITV.

"Wayne was on about a lack of composure and quality, and he was as guilty as anybody. He needs to step up to the plate.

"Wayne's legacy at Manchester United is absolutely fantastic. His goals record is brilliant, but now he's the captain there's a bit more responsibility and he has to do a lot more."

Rooney was filmed slapping wrestler Wade Barrett at a recent WWE event, and Keane said he should not have been there.

The Republic of Ireland assistant manager added: "I always question certain players -- what are they doing off the field? I saw Wayne last week slapping a wrestler, and I'm thinking: 'Why is he getting involved in all that nonsense?'

"There's no benefit to him, so I think I would look at that side to it.

"It's not helping him. If you're not at it yourself, you have to have a look and lead by example. He didn't do that tonight."

The result left United second in Group B, facing a tricky final game away to leaders Wolfsburg, and former midfielder Paul Scholes told BT Sport:

"Attacking wise they don't look a threat, they don't look good enough, they don't look like they're going to go and score goals."
