MANCHESTER -- Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial are able to return for Manchester United as their striking injury crisis has eased for Wednesday's Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven.
But manager Louis van Gaal, who will still be without five sidelined players, has told his forwards they need to prove they are fit enough to start against the Dutch champions.
Van Gaal has previously said that captain Rooney has "privileges" when it comes to selection and vowed to restore those privileges -- but only if the 30-year-old is in the right shape to begin games.
Rooney missed United's 2-1 win over Watford with illness while Martial did not feature because of a foot problem but both are back in contention, along with Marouane Fellaini and James Wilson, as United now have a full contingent of strikers.
But centre-back Phil Jones, who sustained a foot injury at Vicarage Road, and midfielder Ander Herrera, who has a hamstring problem, are both out.
"We have five injured players," said Van Gaal in a news conference. "Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia, weeks ago he has been operated on, and after the international break it was Michael Carrick [was also ruled out] and the last match we had Herrera and Phil Jones. They cannot play. The other players are available."
Rooney has begun every Premier and Champions League match for which he has been available this season but Van Gaal said he is not guaranteed to start against PSV.
"That is not automatic," he added. "It is always a decision of the manager. I always compare players with each other and I take into account how fit they are and how fit they show they are in the training sessions.
"That is why Fellaini and Rooney and Martial has to show their fitness on the training ground and then I have to compare which are the best players to fit in our gameplan. That is the same procedure every match."
Pressed about Rooney, he replied: "Fitness is the most important thing. He has to show his fitness. Then he has all the privileges."
Bastian Schweinsteiger did not take part in United's open training session on Tuesday but Van Gaal confirmed the World Cup winner is fit and available.
