Louis van Gaal rues United penalty call, 'sick' of Wayne Rooney questions

MANCHESTER -- Louis van Gaal said Manchester United should have had a penalty in their derby stalemate against Manchester City at Old Trafford, and also said he was "sick" of questions about striker Wayne Rooney.

The United manager was annoyed that referee Mark Clattenburg did not point to the spot when Raheem Sterling challenged Ander Herrera.

And he believes replays prove the £49 million winger committed a foul on United's Spanish midfielder.

"I am disappointed and we don't have the luck," he said in a news conference.

"Because I have seen on the video that it was a penalty on Herrera but the referee was not giving us that benefit and of course it is difficult to see.

"I can see it clearly on the video that he [Sterling] doesn't touch the ball but the legs of Herrera but that luck we don't have this season but I can imagine it is very difficult for the referee so it is not a big issue. It is not the first time I see it that way."

The Dutchman refused to talk about captain Rooney, who struggled in attack, saying: "I don't give any more answers about Wayne Rooney. I am sick of them."

Van Gaal also rued his side's finishing and felt that centre-back Chris Smalling should have done better with chances in either half, although he praised substitute Jesse Lingard, who struck the bar with a late volley.

"We have to score also the three chances, Lingard and Smalling two times," Van Gaal added.

"I was surprised Lingard could do that because it was a very difficult situation for him. He did it remarkably well. We know we created so many chances because it is difficult how they have played."

Van Gaal felt City were defensive but did not criticise them for it, adding: "They have the right to play compact and they have done it."
