Wayne Rooney ruled out of Man United game at PSV Eindhoven

Wayne Rooney has been left out of the Manchester United squad to face PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Tuesday due to the injury that saw him miss Saturday's 3-1 win over Liverpool.

Rooney, 29, sustained a hamstring problem during training last week, leading him to sit out the weekend's Premier League victory.

The England captain was expected to be absent for his side's opening group-stage clash against PSV, and United confirmed as much when announcing their squad for the game on Monday morning.

"Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney has missed the trip to PSV Eindhoven with the injury he sustained in training ahead of Saturday's 3-1 win over Liverpool," a United statement read.

"As expected, the striker is not being rushed back for the UEFA Champions League group stage opener in Holland, although manager Louis van Gaal did hope to have him available for Sunday's Premier League clash at Southampton when speaking at the weekend."

Van Gaal has named the same squad that beat Liverpool, while also including youngsters James Wilson and Andreas Pereira for the trip to Eindhoven.

"Young forwards James Wilson and Andreas Pereira, who was signed from PSV, have both been added to the 18-man squad that was on duty against Liverpool at Old Trafford," the statement continued. "Pereira suffered an injury while away with Brazil's under-23 side but is fit for selection again."

Rooney's absence means Anthony Martial could be handed his first ever United start after coming off the bench on Saturday to score on his debut.

Marouane Fellaini could also lead the line for the Red Devils after doing so against Liverpool at the weekend.
