Morgan Schneiderlin says Louis van Gaal has helped him to rise to the challenge at Manchester United but added that the Dutchman is a tough man to please.

Schneiderlin, 25, moved to Old Trafford from Southampton in July for £25 million.

The France international told Le Parisien that Van Gaal had helped persuade him to leave his "comfort zone" and switch to Old Trafford from the south coast.

"Van Gaal knew me as a footballer but he wanted to understand my character and my personality better," he said. "He set out his playing philosophy and told me about himself.

"On the pitch, he wants me to repeat my performances with Southampton -- that I play with the same aggression and that I win the ball back -- but he's very strict and he's very hard to satisfy."

Schneiderlin had spent seven seasons at Southampton, and he said: "I could have stayed.

"The club offered me a new contract and I felt at home, but I needed to get out of my comfort zone.

"I feel ready to face this type of challenge and I'm not putting myself under any unnecessary pressure. Anyway, I'm living my dream. I couldn't refuse Manchester United."
