Ashley Young backs David De Gea to cope with failed Man United exit

Manchester United winger Ashley Young expects goalkeeper David De Gea to handle the collapse of his move to Real Madrid in a professional manner.

De Gea's long-anticipated move to the Bernabeu dramatically fell through on Monday night because paperwork was not processed in time.

The clubs had agreed a £29 million deal but formalities were not completed before Spain's 11 p.m. deadline. A row has since broken out between the clubs over who was to blame for the fiasco.

De Gea has not played this season because manager Louis van Gaal did not consider him in the right frame of mind after a summer of speculation over his future.

The 24-year-old Spaniard must now contemplate returning to Old Trafford after the current international break, but teammate Young believes he will cope.

Young said: "Obviously David is a professional. He is a professional player -- always has been, always will be."

United were also involved in some big business on England's transfer deadline day, signing 19-year-old Monaco striker Anthony Martial for a world record fee for a teenager of £36 million.

Martial, a France Under-21 international, is largely unproven but is regarded as a top prospect in France, where he has even been compared to Thierry Henry.

Young said: "I have not really seen too much of him from the French League but he is a prospect. He is a young boy coming to bring his talent to the squad here. That is fantastic and I am sure he will come and do as well as he can."

Young was speaking at Old Trafford at an event to unveil IT services company.

The 30-year-old has started just one of United's first six games of the season in all competitions and has been left out of the current England squad but is confident his chance will come.

He said: "I want to be playing week in, week out. I think every player does, but there is competition for places.

"Being in the Champions League now everyone is going to be called upon, so you have got to be ready when the manager calls upon you.

"I have just got to concentrate on things here, get myself into the team, put on the good displays I have shown in the past and hopefully England will come knocking again."

United have had a mixed start to the season, picking up seven points from their first three Premier League games and qualifying for the Champions League group stage, but then losing at Swansea last weekend. They host arch-rivals Liverpool in their next game.

Young said: "The last game -- it was a little bit disappointing how things turned out, but we have made a good start and we go into another massive game after the international break and we will just kick on from there."
