Nicolas Otamendi not being pursued by Manchester United - sources

Sources tell ESPN FC that there is "no truth" to the speculation that Manchester United are on the brink of completing a move for Valencia's Nicolas Otamendi, and insist the Old Trafford club are not currently pursuing the Argentine centre-half.

David De Gea's situation aside, the club's one big remaining target this summer is a ball-playing centre-half.

United boss Louis Van Gaal has identified Michael Carrick as a potential stand-in at the position if they cannot buy the right option, given United's numbers in midfield, but he would prefer to find a solution from outside of the current roster.

Otamendi's more abrasive style does not fit that profile. United are aware, however, that a deal for the Argentine could be done easily, and he could yet emerge as a defensive option if there are no other signings by the end of the window.

Otamendi, 27, was superb for Valencia last season, scoring six times and leading a defence which helped secure fourth place in La Liga.

That form saw him secure a starting place for Argentina at this year's Copa America, and also led to speculation that a move to United was in the offing.
