Ashley Young reveals no Manchester United contract offer

Manchester United winger Ashley Young has admitted he is unsure about his future at the club after confirming he has yet to be offered a new contract to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

The arrival of Dutch winger Memphis Depay at United this summer has seemingly put pressure on Young's place in Louis van Gaal's side, yet he is keen to stay and fight for his place in the team.

With Young's current United deal set to expire next summer, reports at the back end of last season that he was set to open talks over extending his stay at the club have yet to develop into a concrete offer.

"I'm at one of the biggest clubs in the world so I want to stay here as long as possible," Young said. "That's exactly what I want to do. I think a lot of people thought I had it done [a new deal] but I haven't. It's in the club's hands now so I will have to see how it goes.

"I hope we can sort things out. There have been preliminary talks so I am just looking to go out on the pitch and leave my agent to take care of that.

"I was delighted with how things went last season but that was last season. This is a new season and I have to take the confidence that I had and build on it again. I hope it'll go as well as last year."

Young enjoyed something of a revival at United last season as he made 26 Premier League appearances, after a period that saw him fall out of favour during Sir Alex Ferguson's final year in charge and during David Moyes' brief stint as the club's manager.

The player who was signed from Aston Villa in the summer of 2011 for a reported fee of around £17 million is hoping his form in Van Gaal's first campaign as manager will help him secure the new deal he is craving at United.

"These days you have to be able to play in one or two positions and last season the manager wanted me to play as a wing-back," he added. "I think I adjusted to that well.

"When you have quality from back to front and have players who can play in different positions, then that can only be good for the squad. I've had to slot in to different positions for him. Last season I even ended up at left-back, and that's new for me, but I know I can go out there and do a job.

"I'm intelligent and have a good football brain and can read the game, so whatever the manager wants me to do I'll do. I'll do it as well as I can and get in the starting lineup.

"This is a brilliant squad. We've got competition for places and I've always said that's great.

"We have world-class players in every position. You should watch training. Players take it seriously, just like they do in a match. They're disappointed when they lose training matches and that's the way it should be here. It's the Manchester United winning way. Everyone has it. The competition has to inspire you. It keeps everyone on their toes.

"I'm a player who wants to be playing every week. I'm getting to the back end of the age scale and I'm beginning to feel it, but I still want to play every week."
