SEATTLE, Wash. -- Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young have praised the impact of Manchester United's new signings on the club's summer tour.
Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Memphis Depay and Matteo Darmian made their first appearances in Friday's 1-0 friendly win vs. Club America, with Schneiderlin scoring a fifth-minute winner.
"Obviously it was their first game for the club and they all did well," club captain Rooney told ESPN FC. "Morgan getting a goal was great for him and then Bastian played the second half and did really well too. It's good for them to get their first minutes on the pitch."
United will play their next friendly against San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday and Young says that being away from home has helped the new faces get to know their new teammates.
"It's nice to get them embedded and on tour as well," Young told ESPN FC. "I think it's quite important that, when new players come in, you get to be with them day-in and day-out. We start to see their characters and they start to see ours."
A feature of Friday's game was the use by manager Louis van Gaal of 22 players, with each logging 45 minutes.
The United boss has said he will adopt the same method on Tuesday and Rooney explained that, in addition to building fitness, a feature of preseason has been preparation for the upcoming Premier League campaign, which United open at home to Tottenham on Aug. 8.
"[Van Gaal] wants us to work on different tactics and different situations in the game, different aspects of how the team plays and how we're going to cope with it. It's all good preparation for the first [Premier League] game."
After Tuesday's game, United face Barcelona in Santa Clara on July 25 and Paris Saint-Germain in Chicago four days later to conclude the club's sixth tour of the U.S. since 2003.
"We always enjoy touring America," said Young. "From my very first tour the fans have been fantastic, always round the hotel. You sign autographs and take pictures and then when we go training at the stadium the amount of fans that come out is brilliant for us."
After United face Tottenham, either side of a league visit to Aston Villa is a two-legged Champions League playoff, the draw for which takes place on Aug. 7. Having failed to qualify for last season's tournament, Young is pleased to be back in European club football's premier competition.
"It was disappointing but we will move on to this season and are looking to do as well as we can," he added. "A club like Manchester United needs to be doing well in the biggest competition in Europe and fighting for titles and cups."
United continue to be linked to new signings but, far from being unsettling to the existing members of the squad, Young insists that incoming players are beneficial.
"The manager has said he wants a few players in every position and it's always competition for places which keeps everyone on their toes," he said. "If you were to see training then everyone is giving 100 percent, as if it was a game situation."
Meanwhile, on a personal level, Young is keen to continue the form which made him a key player in United's push for a top-four finish at the end of the 2014-15 season.
"I always set myself goals at the start of every season," he explained. "I keep them to myself and tick them off in my own head. I have set myself goals and targets for this season so hopefully I can achieve them."
