Memphis Depay has insisted he does not wanted to be burdened by comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo as he starts his Manchester United career.
The Holland international has arrived from PSV Eindhoven for £25 million after finishing as the top scorer in the Dutch league last season.
Ronaldo was United's last prolific winger, scoring 91 times in the three seasons before his record 2009 move to Real Madrid.
But while Depay, 21, is an admirer of the three-time Ballon d'Or winner, he hopes to make a name in his own right.
"I don't want to compare myself with somebody like that," he said in a news conference.
"That is the best player in the world. I don't want to talk too much. I want to show it on the pitch. I am still young, [I have not been] in the game for many years in the game, I [only] played two seasons for PSV. I want to let my feet speak."
Depay spent much of his PSV career on the flanks, but Van Gaal suggested he could use his fellow Dutchman as a centre-forward.
United will be short of specialist strikers when Robin van Persie joins Fenerbahce and Depay, in idiosyncratic language, expressed a willingness to play wherever Van Gaal wants him to operate.
"I have been working with the trainer also in the World Cup," he said. "You see what he expects. Before I play on the left wing, I think I am a winger. But where he puts me is on the bus."
Depay is confident that he can be prolific in the Premier League, adding: "I believe I will work on it and I am excited to do my job for Manchester United and to score goals. I am a striker so I have to score goals and give assists."
He believes United, who finished fourth last season, can regain the Premier League title, explaining: "I think the team has the quality to win the title and all the trophies there are to win. It is the biggest club in the world."
He said he was delighted to be at Old Trafford, elaborating: "I am very excited. It is a dream that came true. I have to improve myself in the Premier League. I am very happy to be here."
