Manchester United move preseason match to San Jose

Manchester United have made a late change to their preseason tour by switching the venue of their match against San Jose Earthquakes on July 21 to ease travel plans.

The game was scheduled to be played at the 63,000-capacity California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, California, but will now be held at the 18,000-seat Avaya Stadium near San Jose -- avoiding a 90-mile round trip but meaning thousands of fans who were expecting to see the game will now miss out on a ticket.

Last season's tour to the United States was criticised by United manager Louis van Gaal for the vast distances they were required to travel which impacted on training schedules.

A statement from Cal Athletics said: "Our campus representatives were informed by our promotional partner, Relevent Sports, that the Manchester United vs. San Jose Earthquakes match scheduled for July 21 at California Memorial Stadium, has been relocated to Avaya Stadium in San Jose.

"We were informed that the change in venue was made in order to better meet Manchester United's travel and logistical requirements.

"Those who purchased tickets will be issued a full refund and should expect their refund within 5-7 days.

"In addition, we have been informed by the promoter that those who purchased tickets for the match in Berkeley will be eligible for a special pre-sale opportunity to purchase seats before they go on sale to the general public."
