Memphis Depay wants to reach Cristiano Ronaldo level at Man United

Memphis Depay has set himself the challenge of becoming as good as Cristiano Ronaldo and said he believes he can turn himself into one of the top players on the planet at Manchester United.

Depay, who has said he relishes comparisons with the current World Player of the Year, has shown his confidence in his ability as he prepares to become Louis van Gaal's first summer signing.

United have agreed a £25 million fee with new Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven for the winger, who is the 22-goal top scorer in the Eredivisie.

Depay's ability to be prolific as a winger has prompted talk of Ronaldo, who scored 91 goals in his last three seasons at Old Trafford before joining Real Madrid in 2009.

The Netherlands international told Goal.com: "I heard people compare me to Cristiano Ronaldo. It's great to hear other people say that but I'm still 21 and I hope one day I can reach the level of Cristiano Ronaldo.

"I'm the same player as him in style and he's a big hero for me. He scored so many goals and I have to fight to be the same."

The 21-year-old was nominated for the award of the best young player at last summer's World Cup but has set his sights higher.

He told the Daily Mail: "I believe I can be one of the best players in the world. That's why I have my 'Dreamchaser' tattoo on my chest. I don't have a secret.

"You have to work on your dreams every day and that's what I am doing. I was very happy with my World Cup, but even when the World Cup was finished, I knew I had to keep very focused. That's what I spoke to my manager about. That's one of the keys to my success.

"I'm very excited. I've always dreamt about the Premier League -- it's a big dream that's come true. But it's not the end of the dream -- it's just starting."
