Memphis Depay to be Man United's new Cristiano Ronaldo - Leroy Fer

Leroy Fer believes his Netherlands teammate Memphis Depay will relish the chance to become Manchester United's new Cristiano Ronaldo.

PSV Eindhoven winger Depay is set to become United's first summer signing after the two clubs agreed a £25 million fee for the 21-year-old.

QPR midfielder Fer was a colleague of Depay's as both helped Netherlands, under United manager Louis van Gaal, finish third in last summer's World Cup.

And he feels the youngster has the temperament and talent to succeed at Old Trafford as Ronaldo did following his £12.8 million arrival from Sporting Lisbon in 2003.

The Portuguese went on to win three Premier League titles, the Champions League and the World Player of the Year award in six seasons at United, scoring 91 goals in his last three years.

And Fer told national newspapers Depay will be a major success in England, saying: "He won't be scared and that's what I like about him. He will enjoy the comparison with Ronaldo and he will be a big player.

"He's not as tall as Ronaldo but he's very talented, he's strong, he's quick, he's got the skills and he can score goals. He's a massive player and he's going to be big in Manchester.

"Of course he has to adapt to the Premier League and United are one of the biggest clubs, but I don't think it's going to be hard for him because he's a very confident player.

"Ronaldo is a bigger player than him right now because of what he's done.

"But Memphis is only 21 and if he can be as good as Ronaldo was at United he is going to be a big player. I think he can be.

Depay is the top scorer in the Eredivisie and Netherlands manager Guus Hiddink feels it is the right time for him to move on.

Hiddink told De Telegraaf: "He comes to play on a higher stage. There are new rules, and that is good for him to experience.

"He's ready to go. [There will be] lots of hard contests, higher speed and different rules in the dressing rooms. That's good for his development and then also good for the Netherlands."
