Manchester City's Aguero hails new diet for healthier 2014-15 campaign

Sergio Aguero has revealed the new diet that has helped him stay fitter this season and which he hopes will transform his career.

The World Cup finalist has been absent for large swathes of the past two campaigns with calf and hamstring problems.

But after cutting out pasta, sugar and meat, he has only missed five league games this season, while showing he retains his appetite for goals by becoming the Premier League's top scorer.

Aguero's hat trick against QPR on Sunday took his tally to 25 in the Premier League and 31 in all competitions, both career-best totals.

His only spell on the sidelines this season came after he suffered a knee injury against Everton in December.

And he said: "I had to change a lot of things, starting with my food. I needed a healthier way of life.

"Touch wood, I haven't had any muscle injuries this season, only the knee problem.

"I went to a doctor in Italy and he checked everything we did, and I had to change quite a bit -- no more pasta, no more sugar and no meat, which I used to eat quite a bit because Argentinian meat is very good.

"Hopefully, this season has proved that it has worked and I can stay the same until the end of my career.

"In training sessions I was struggling a little bit last season. For example, after every three training sessions I had to stop -- so I have improved in that.

"I have also had to have a lot of treatment after training sessions as well -- now I hope I can stay like this until the end of my career."

Despite his goal return, Aguero feels opponents are paying him closer attention these days.

He explained: "I hope I can keep scoring like this, but defenders now know me a bit better and defend against me in different ways. My job is to score goals, but what I really want next season is for City to win titles."

While Aguero has pulled five goals clear of the Premier League's second top scorer, Tottenham's Harry Kane, the Spurs forward and Chelsea's Diego Costa were chosen in the PFA Team of the Year ahead of him.

The Argentinian has never been voted into the side by his peers and was overlooked for the Young Player of the Year award in 2011-12, when Tottenham's Kyle Walker won.

"It also happened in the season when I scored 23 goals and we won the Premier League and I didn't get the Young Player of the Season award," he said.
