Marouane Fellaini struggled with Man United pressure - David Moyes

David Moyes has said Marouane Fellaini suffered when he went to Old Trafford because of Manchester United's failure to land other signings after his appointment.

Moyes made Fellaini his first major signing for United when he brought in the Belgian from his former club Everton for £27.5 million on the final day of the transfer window in 2013.

But he was United's only addition in a transfer window when they had attempted to sign players such as Gareth Bale, Cesc Fabregas, Leighton Baines and Ander Herrera.

Fellaini did not score and lost his place in a difficult first year at United but has gone on to become a pivotal member of Louis van Gaal's side this season.

And Moyes thinks the midfielder's initial difficulties came because of the pressure of being the only new face at Old Trafford.

Moyes told the Daily Express: "It was a big move for him, it was a big move following me and being the only signing made it even more difficult.

"We wanted to bring in other players and the recruitment didn't work the way we wanted it to and, ideally, we wouldn't have made Fellaini our one and only signing if we could have helped it.

"But I am not surprised at Fellaini because I thought he had made a big impact on England over the years. He texts me quite regular and I always text him back and tell him how well he is doing and to keep going. I'm really pleased for him.

"He will not be everyone's cup of tea, but he can affect games and you want players who can affect games."
